The Best of Recent News and Viral Videos

written by Annie on July 15, 2013 in Motivational Monday with 2 comments

In the past few weeks there have been several viral videos and news stories that have been extremely emotional for me. I can’t get them out of my head and am so excited to share with you in the chance that maybe you haven’t seen one yet. Enjoy.

Happy Birthday Malala!

Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani schoolgirl who was shot in the head by the Taliban in an attempted assassination. Supported by her father, Malala has been an activist for education and attracted Taliban attention by blogging about life inside the Swat Valley under Taliban rule. After the attack, she not only lived, but recovered and gave this powerful speech on her 16th birthday last week in front of the United Nations in New York City.
‘The terrorists thought they would change my aim and stop my ambitions.
But nothing changed except this weakness, fear and helplessness died, and strength, power and courage was born.’
I dare you not to cry.

I Stand with Wendy

Wendy Davis, the Texan State Senator who wore a back brace and sneakers and talked for nearly 11 hours to filibuster a bill that would close nearly every abortion clinic in Texas. She was ready for 13 hours.

Wendy Davis stood and spoke for 11 hours

Women have the best endurance, in sports and oppressive regimes

Elham Sadat Asghari, an Iranian record setting ocean swimmer who is unfortunately female. After wearing 13 pounds of clothes: a diving suit, a full jacket, and a headscarf while swimming 20 km (12 miles!!!) at a female-only beach in the Caspian Sea, Iranian officials are refusing to recognize her swim. By saying her form was recognizable. Ironically by trying to cover up her achievement (oh the puns!), international outrage has brought her straight into the spotlight. I couldn’t be happier for her. And I would loveee to see any of those men put on 13 pounds of oppression and try to swim for 12 minutes.

Dustin Hoffman, from cross dresser to champion of women everywhere

Dustin Hoffman tears up discussing his major realization around women’s struggle to fit society’s definition of “beauty” through his role as a woman in “Tootsie”.
“There’s too many interesting women I have not had the experience to know in this life because I have been brainwashed.”
I believe this to be true of both genders in general and believe everyone should lighten up on their consumption of celebrity magazines and talk to people. People are fascinating and surprising and wonderful.

Girl Learns How to Dance

This woman made a YouTube video of her journey to learn how to dance over one year. Ignore the dancing if it’s not your style. Appreciate her dedication to her goal. How many people actually get up and commit to a goal for a year? Imagine what our lives would be like if we all did that. P.S. who wants to sign up for dance lessons with me?

Start every day like this!
